We base our learning on child initiated and adult led activities, we cover all areas of learning as set out in the Development Matters in the Early Years Foundation Stage guide lines (2021). Your child will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through 7 areas of learning and development.

Prime Areas

Children should mostly develop the 3 prime areas first these are:

  • Communication and language
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical development

These prime areas are the most essential for your child’s healthy development and future learning.

Specific Areas

As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in 4 specific areas. These are:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

Each child within the setting is allocated a key person who will keep a record of your child’s development and progress in the form of a learning journey, we use the Tapestry Platform to share Learning Journeys. We hold a Parent Chat once a term. We promote equal opportunity and value diversity for all children and families in our setting.

At Thurston Childcare we promote positive lifestyle choice and ensure that they have the best foundation for their physical development, making sure they get enough water, food, exercise and sleep. Emotional development is no different we ensure that every child has a voice and is listened to. We encourage children to identify and talk about their feelings.

We promote awe and wonder in the setting by having spontaneous in the moment planning. Looking at things in the environment and providing learning opportunities all the time.
